Sibelius Music Scores

Original compositions and arrangements created with the Sibelius 4 music notation software. You may need to download the Sibelius Scortch plug-in to view and play the scores.
Misirlou Classic surf tune guitar tabs, arranged from The Trashmen's 1963 album, Surfin' Bird
Goldberg Variation 31 A slightly modern spin on Bach's Goldberg Variations, based on Glen Gould's 1981 interpretation.
Norwegian Wood An arrangement for solo harp (for Judy)
Gymnopedie No. 1 Arranged for piano and harp (for Judy)

Suite for Piano

A shameless homage to Eric Satie and Maurice Ravel in three movements (so far). The nonsense instructions in the second movement is reminiscent of Satie's Gnossiens - "so as to be a hole" is one of my personal favorites.
Quintet for Winds and Occassional Guest Instrument

Taking more than 10 years (and still counting) to compose, the Quintet is more of a musical journal than stand-alone composition. Some notes on the movements:

  • Mechanical Resonator. I wrote the first draft in a hotel room (I forget where) on a business trip while working for Verizon. The year was 1996 and Verizon was GTE at the time. I used a simple but amazingly versatile tool called Music Time. A single 1-bar theme is repeated in each instrument starting on different notes of the theme, transposed or inverted. I converted to Sibelius about 5 years ago and added the piano part a year later. I remember that I wrote the main theme by picking notes at random.
  • Iconoclast. Inspired by an early electronic piece called Gargoyles by Otto Luenning. I still have the original vinly of the recording done at the Columbia-Princeton Electronic music center. The year was 1967 I believe. Back then a decent synthesizer was the size of your average living room or larger. Listening to the original, I had the image of the voice of reason (the iconoclast - represented by a solo violin) being drowned out by the mechanical and repetitous voices of mindless conformity.
  • Tiger's Revenge is the punchline to one of my dad's favorite jokes. It was one of those book-by jokes. His two favorites were "Halt On the Desert", by I. P. Freely and "Tiger's Revenge" by Claude Balls. Pretty funny stuff when your 8 years old.
