Followed By Madness

For Scott
The Newark Hight Schooll Class of ’69
and to the memory of David Bloom (1931 – 1965)

Footfalls echo in the memory
Down the passage which we did not take
Towards the door we never opened
Into the rose-garden.
            —T. S. Elliot,  Four Quartets

Isn’t that something the way certain things fall into different categories?
—David Bloom, Clifton Springs NY, 1963

So many writers have influenced and inspired me over the years (and there’s been quite a few of those), that it’s hard to know where to start. But as Glinda, the Good Witch of the North would say, “It’s always best to start at the beginning.” My Yellow Brick Roads starts with Barry Yourgrau who’s most excellent (and entertaining) stories inspired me to start writing stories in the first place. I pounded out a little number called Excuses back in 1987 after reading Yourgrau’s Wearing Dad’s Head. I also want to thank my good friends who inspired and supported me over the years: my best friend Scott Powell, Kathy, Nancy, Wendy, Karen, Bernie, Tom Dunnigan, and Don Bench.
